Movie review: Captain America
Last night my girlfriend and i went to see Captain America, the 2D version because i really, really, really hate the 3D movie hype and the way they serve 3D with the stupid not fitting glasses and the nice headache you get afterwards. As long as they don’t have a decent 3D setup where i don’t need the glasses (the bloody things don’t fit over my regular glasses!!) i refuse to pay for it.
First off i need to get something out of my system, after about 15 years we decided to give the local cinema in Lelystad (Netherlands) a try. What a sh*thole it has become. Those that follow my twitter stream (and can read dutch) probably saw me complain about the cinema already, but i feel the need to complain about it here as well. The cinema is small and outdated, now that can work at it’s charm off course, but as is, the exploitant “Utopolis” does not seem to put any cash into the building. The carpets are worn so much the red spots have turned gray, the seats are broken and if you’re unlucky the cushions in the seat are so old they won’t hold you. In the movie room 4 lights where broken and the sound system is even crappier than my brothers LG 2.1 setup. And what got me annoyed the most is that they “demand” you be at the movies 30 minutes before it starts to collect your ticket, then annoy the crap out of you by showing you the same commercial for those 30 minutes, then they start the movie (which begin with more f*cking commercials) and they break the movie halfway to show you the same commercials they started with for 10 more minutes.
Needless to say, the movie better be worth it, because this is the last time i’ve went to this cinema. I’d rather face charges for downloading a movie then sit in Utopolis Lelystad ever again….
Ok so that was the rant (sorry about that), now to get to the movie itself. Captain America, the 5th movie in the cycle to get to assembling the Avengers. It started with The incredible Hulk, then Iron Man followed by Iron Man 2 and Thor. Now Captain America takes it place. My first credits go to Hugo Weaving (also remembered as Agent Smith from the Matrix). He was solid, he sold the madness and powers of the red skull brilliantly in my opinion. Also Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell and Tommy Lee Jones where solid performers in the movie. Dominic Cooper made a very convincing Howard Stark and selling the “technology is not ready”-piece from the Iron Man movies by not letting everything work as expected was a very good move which helped the overall storyline. I loved the way they sold the transformation from small Steve to Captain America and how they build up the Steve Rogers character. Also the tie-in of Asgard and the tree of planets was done nicely. Now those who have read the comics (as i have) should know the basic storyline and have an image on what to expect and those that haven’t read the comics are probably stepping into this movie without a good expectation. But then again, who haven’t heard of Captain America?
The only negative in the movie is that there is no explanation of how the “special team” that Steve Rogers puts together came so, except for seeing them captured in the Hydra base and later them drinking together there is no bond between these “troops” and Captain America. Exception off course for Bucky who builds up into the story from the start.
If you haven’t seen the previous movies, i would recommend watching them first, you can watch this movie without seeing them, but the linking of story lines works best when seeing the movies in sequence. But whatever you do, i do recommend this movie….
